TIRUNELVELI: Naturalists here want the Department of Forest and Tamil Nadu Electricity Board to join hands to avoid electrocution of wild animals by power cables passing through the Kalakkad-Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve. The tiger reserve is known to be one of the best protected reserve for plants and animals and a hotspot for endemic flora and fauna within the Agasthyamalai range. The reserve, a residence to several unique species including five different primates, the endangered tiger, Asian elephant etc., houses a few man-made enclaves such as tea plantations, dams, roads and electricity projects, which at times pose a threat to wildlife. Death traps The electric poles and the power cables often become death traps not only for large animals, but even small arboreal mammals. Over the last several years, rare and endangered animals like the Nilgiri langurs and the lion-tailed macaques have been observed dying due to electrocution while jumping over the branches under or above the power line passing through the trees. Power lines This often happens in dense forest areas, where the power line goes through the jungle.
