Call to tackle sea polluters

THE Indian Coast Guard Director General Vice Admiral R F Contractor on Thursday advocated for a mechanism to enforce strict regulations against sea polluters. Inaugurating the 11th National Oil Spill Disaster Contingency Plan (NOS-DCP) preparedness meeting, hosted by the Chennai Port Trust at its premises, here, Contractor said, "The operation of old and unworthy merchant fleet in our waters is a matter of great concern and is a potential threat to environment security Be ." sides highlighting the efforts of the Indian Coast Guard in ensuring safe and clean seas around the country, he said, "Though laws are there,to keep our shallow waters clean, stringent laws needed to be enforced to tackle the issue." He also announced that the first pollution control vessel would be inducted into the Coast Guard by October this year followed by another two in a span of six months. The ship will patrol along Indian territorial waters to monitor polluters.
