Speakers at a workshop called for taking up projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), which would also help sustainable development of the country. The CDM is an arrangement under the Kyoto Protocol allowing developed countries, which emit most greenhouse gases, to invest in projects that reduce emissions in developing countries as an alternative to more expensive emission reductions in their own countries. The projects implemented in developing countries can also help ensure sustainable development, said AH Md Maksood Sinha, managing partner of Waste Concern Consultants, at the inaugural session of the two-day national capacity building workshop on CDM. Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies and Waste Concern Consultants jointly organised the workshop at the LGED auditorium in the city, with Director General of the Department of Environment Dr Khandaker Rashedul Haque in the chair. "In Bangladesh, CDM projects can be implemented in energy and agriculture sectors. The projects can involve municipal waste management, landfill gas recovery and use of the gas for electricity generation, renewable energy and energy efficient buildings," Maksood Sinha said. Rashedul Haque said the CDM projects can help developing countries reduce greenhouse gas emissions and ensure sustainable development as well. Dr A Atiq Rahman called for raising awareness about Clean Development Mechanism.
