The Amazon surveillance system (known by its Brazilian acronym SIVAM) will develop data to enable Brazilian authorities to track movements of drug traffickers, illegal gold miners and clandestine loggers in the Amazon region. But the scope of SIVAM goes way beyond the combat of lawbreakers. Its surveillance and analysis infrastructure can help the Brazilian government in combating deforestation, protect Indian reservations, improve land occupation, hydrology and soil use.
