JAIPUR: The Rajasthan Government will submit a scheme worth Rs.267 crore to the Centre within a week for permanent construction of distributaries of the Bhakhra irrigation system in northern parts of the State. The system covers an area measuring 20,285 hectares.
State Water Resources Minister Sanwarlal Jat said during question hour in the Assembly on Thursday that the mud distributaries in 12,750 hectares of the irrigated area were absorbing water and adversely affecting the crops in the region. Water is supplied to farmers through metalled distributaries only in an area measuring 7,535 hectares.Mr. Jat said similar work was earlier planned for the Indira Gandhi Canal Project's distributaries through the public contribution or under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. The work is yet to be taken up.
The House witnessed noisy scenes during the question hour over short supply of liquefied petroleum cooking gas (LPG) in Jaipur and elsewhere, with the Opposition Congress alleging that the scarcity was created artificially. Speaker Sumitra Singh adjourned the House for 15 minutes when the ruckus could not be controlled.
Food and Civil Supplies Minister Ghanshyam Tiwari told the House that the LPG consumers across the State would shortly get the facility of booking the cylinders through short messaging service (SMS) on their mobile phones. He said about 30 lakh LPG cylinders were supplied through 429 agencies in the State every month. He said the State Govt. had urged the Centre several times to withdraw the increase in LPG and kerosene prices to help out the common people.
