Canals issues have knocked HC doors time and again

The problem of air and water pollution in the vicinity of Kharikat canal is so complex that even the committee formed by AUDA and AMC to resolve the issue in 2002 expressed helplessness before the Gujarat High Court then. A division bench headed by Justice BC Patel was surprised to know that the committee made a grievance before the court, as authorities rendered no assistance to it for carrying out court's directions. However, the issue continued to be debated in the High Court and directions were issued time and again. The court, in 2000, ordered that appropriate measures should be taken for desiltation in the canal along with other water bodies in the city. Court asked the government to form a scheme to recharge Chandola lake, and directed civic body to remove encroachments from Kharikat canal and its branch connecting the lake. In 2001, the court again gave six weeks' time to AMC and government to submit a report to prepare a plan to carry out directions for encroachment removal. It also observed that if action was initiated before monsoon on priority basis, it would be appreciated by every one. In 2002, it observed that local authorities didn't even carry out orders by the state government to resolve issues in the areas surrounding Kharikat canal.
