A research group from the University of Tokyo's Institute of Industrial Science said it has developed a new, fast way to perform acute-toxicity tests on samples of lake and river water. By evaluating the samples using cultured lines of human cancer cells kept frozen until use, the experiments can be completed in just four hours, compared to the two days it normally takes using animal cells, the research group said.
