Car-free day creates traffic chaos in Paris

French government ministers arrived at the weekly Cabinet meeting yesterday on foot, bicycle or by electric car to mark an anti-pollution 'day without cars'' in 66 French towns and cities. But the day, which was also observed in parts of Switzerland and Italy, paradoxically led to huge traffic jams in those parts of Paris where vehicles were still allowed. The centre of Paris - from the first to fourth arrondissements on the Right Bank and parts of the fifth and sixth in the Latin Quarter - was sealed off to all private vehicles, with only public transport, emergency services or others with special permits allowed to drive there.
