The Chennai Corporation has bought six catamarans to be used to clear weeds and garbage floating on the city's waterways. The new equipment would be used to remove the floating masses and spray larvicide to control mosquito breeding, Mayor M. Subramanian said on Friday. The catamarans were deployed on a stretch of the Adyar river along the Madras Boat Club. Mr. Subramanian said fibre boats were used to clear floating weeds and garbage on the smaller waterways such as Buckingham, Otteri and Captain Cotton canals. The Corporation had used six hired catamarans on the Cooum and Adyar rivers till the new equipment was purchased. Corporation workers would be given life jackets and gum boots for protection. The Corporation also plans to buy 50 hand-held fogging machines for use by self-help groups and 10 fogging machines mounted on vehicles for use on narrow roads.
