The Kollidam Keezhanai Paasana Vivasayigal Sangam has urged MPs of all parties in Tamil Nadu to call on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and impress upon him the need for getting the State’s due share of Cauvery water for the current crop season.
The Sangam, at a meeting convened at Kumaratchi near here, adopted a resolution, according to its president P. Vinayagamoorthy. He told The Hindu that since water from the Mettur dam was not opened on June 12, farmers in the tail-end delta region of Chidambaram and Kattumannarkoil taluks could not raise kuruvai crop.
Of about 15,000 acres to be brought under the crop, sowing was done hardly on 5,000 acres, that too using sub-surface water. Water shortage had prevented the farmers from raising the popular coarse paddy variety, CR-1009 . If water is not released before August 15, even the Andhra Ponni, the staple variety, cannot be raised.
Asserting the rights of delta farmers in Cauvery water, the farmers in the region would picket the office of the Chidambaram Revenue Divisional Officer on July 23.
Mr. Vinayagamoorthy said the farmers would also take out a two-day rally on two-wheelers from Kallanai to Keezhanai (on the first day) and from Keezhanai to Chidambaram (on the second day) to create awareness among authorities of the need for constructing barrages across major rivers in the State.
