CDWP approves Basha Dam funds

The Central Development Working Party (CWDP) approved Rs 116.607 million for the acquisition of land and the resettlement plan for the Basha Dam project in a meeting in Islamabad on Thursday.
The government had allocated Rs 200 million for the project in the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) of 2008-09. The provision does not include construction costs.
Planning Commission spokesman Asif Sheikh told reporters the CWDP approved or recommended 51 development projects worth Rs 262.4 billion including a foreign exchange component of Rs 91.2 billion in the meeting chaired by Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Salman Farooqui. It was the first meeting of the CDWP in the 2008-09 fiscal year.
Circular Railway: The meeting also approved a project for the revival of Karachi Circular Railway as a modern transport system and allocated Rs 52.372 billion to the plan, with a foreign exchange component of Rs 39.257 billion. Sheikh said the project was approved with the condition that the federal government would not bear any operational losses.
The spokesman said the cost of 22 of the approved projects is more than Rs 500 million each. The total cost of the approved projects is Rs 255.5 billion, he said. The provisions would now be placed before the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) for approval. Sheikh said the federal government would finance 46 of the projects
