Census unmasks Assams poverty

The 2001 Census of India has revealed that as many as 30.2 per cent of the households in Assam possess transistors, 18.3 per cent have television sets, 4.3 per cent have telephone connections. Conveyance such as bicycles is possessed by 46.4 per cent of the households while scooter, motorcycles, etc., is possessed by only 5.2 per cent. Only a mere 2 per cent of the households have cars, jeeps, vans, etc. According to the Director of Census Operations, Assam, there are 6,168,994 Census houses in the State out of which, 5,194,290 or 84.2 per cent of houses are in rural areas and the rest 974,704 or 15.8 per cent are in urban areas.
