By Mohinder Verma JAMMU, Aug 29: With no respite from the diarrhoea epidemic in the mountainous and vast Doda district mainly caused by contaminated water, Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry is deputing its team to the district tomorrow to inspect water resources and suggest corrective measures to tackle the epidemic and prevent its recurrence in the future. Authoritative sources told the EXCELSIOR that as over 1200 people have so far been affected due to diarrhoea and more cases are coming to fore with every passing day, the Union Health and Family Welfare Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad, has decided to depute a team of the Ministry to inspect the water resources of the epidemic hit Doda district besides sanitation around the water supply distribution network. The team will arrive tomorrow and carry out detailed inspection of all the water resources from where the water supply is being distributed to the people mainly in the Doda city and its surrounding areas, they said, adding after detailed investigation along with Deputy Commissioner, Doda, Farooq Ahmed Khan and officers of the State Health and Public Health Engineering Departments, the team will suggest corrective measures to the administration in order to check epidemic and prevent its recurrence in future. Mr Azad, who belongs to Bhaderwah area of the district, took the decision of deputing a team as epidemic has broken out mainly due to supply of contaminated water to the people even from those resources where the water is being treated scientifically, the sources disclosed. The district has two modern scientific water treatment plants at Machan and Sah while as at other resources, the water is being treated in unscientific manner before being supplied for the human consumption, they said, adding due to recent heavy rains and subsequent flash floods, the water supply distribution system suffered damages at many places as a result of which water from scientific treatment plants also got contaminated at the leakage points. "This is because of this reason that even after discontinuation of water supply from two other water resources feeding the Doda city and its adjoining areas soon after the outbreak of epidemic on August 22, that sizeable number of diarrhoea cases are still being reported", sources said while disclosing that 30 more diarrhoea affected people were admitted in the District Hospital today. As the district administration has been finding it difficult to meet the drinking water requirement due to suspension of supply from two water resources, the Central team will suggest measures required to be taken vis-
