Centre axes hotel project in national park, seeks action against foresters

The Centre has directed the Karnataka Government to take over in 45 days the forest area leased to a five star hotel group at Nagarahole National Park in Kodagu district.It has also sought a report on the action taken against the officers behind the leasing of land within 60 days. Gateway Hotels and Gateway Resorts Limited had been leased 6,356 sq km of land in the Nagarahole forsts for 18 years. In a letter despatched on May 28, 1988, to Principal Forest Secretary00 S. Swatantra Rao, the Chief Conservator with the Forest Ministry ordered that this be cancelled, adding:"The responsibility for violation of the Act (Forest Conservation Act) be fixed up and action taken or proposed to be taken against the concerned officers be reported within 60 days."
