Centre caught between devil and the deep sea on sealing of shops

A centre-judiciary confrontation appeared imminent, with the Supreme Court taking strong exception to the regularisation notification issued by the government to overcome troubles over the court order to shut shops illegally run from residential areas. The apex court made it clear that it would not stop sealing of shops and showrooms in places designated as residential areas. The Centre, which is under pressure from the powerful traders' lobby, had early this week come out with a notification legalising illegal commercial operations. "How can that (the notification) reverse our orders?' an angry Supreme Court bench comprising chief justice Y K Sabharwal, justice C K Thakker and justice R V Raveendran asked.
