Centre hails rural schemes in Kokrajhar

Rural Development Minister, Raghuvansh Prasad Singh today was all praises for the flood control works undertaken under National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) schemes initiative in BTAD area in Assam. Addressing a press conference to mark the extension of the NREGA schemes to cover the entire country, Union Rural Development Minister, Raghuvansh Prasad Yadav said all the remaining 274 districts would be covered under the Scheme. NREGA scheme was introduced in February 2006 in 200 districts. It was subsequently extended to 130 districts. Under the Phase I, seven districts including Bongaigaon, Dhemaji, Goalpara, Karbi Anglong, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur and North Cachar Hills were covered. In Phase II, six others including Morigaon, Darrang, Nalbari, Barpeta, Hailakandi and Cachar were included. Referring to Assam, he said he has toured many places in the State but he was impressed by what he saw in Kokrajhar district. A dam was constructed to prevent flooding by rivers originating in Bhutan. The dam constructed under the Scheme cost Rs 9 crore, he said. Yadav said 1057 flood control and protection works have been completed, while 646 are ongoing in the State. In Assam, 10.64 lakh households were provided employment. The State has been made available Rs 75088.62 lakh.
