Centre may give Rs 10,000-crore facelift to 60 cities

The Centre may provide assistance to the extent of Rs 10,000 crore annually as viability gap funding for the proposed national urban renewal mission to give select cities a reforms-driven fast-track makeover. The mission proposes upgradation of cities' infrastructure and transportation services as well as redevelopment of slums with resettlement of the urban poor such that they become centres of economic growth. The mission, expected to cover some 60 cities as per latest estimates, may involve a total expenditure upwards of Rs 1,20,000 crore over a five-year period.
