The Ministry of Surface Transport has finalised its own Euro--II equivalent emission norms -- the Modified India 2000-- which will come into effect on and from 1, April, 2000, as directed by the Supreme Court. The new emission standards will be applicable for all vehicles manufactured on and after 1 April, 2000. Sources in the surface transport ministry point out that the new emission standards are close to the Euro--II norms except for certain technical points like driving cycles and cold start.
