Bhubaneswar: Concerned over the inordinate delay and uncertainty over implementation of the country’s largest Foreign Direct Investment in the shape of the Posco project in Odisha, the Centre has sought the latest status report on the mega-steel venture. The steel ministry, in its latest letter to the state government, has asked for the current status of the Rs 52,000-crore Posco project near Paradip in Jagatsinghpur district.
The South Korean steel major is facing a tough time in implementing its project due to the continuing resistance from a large section of the villagers. The Posco issue would figure in the next round of the meeting between India and the Republic of Korea scheduled to be held in Seoul on February 27-28, said official sources.
Accordingly, both Ipicol and Idco have furnished a detailed status report, which reveals that the project has not made any big headway. However, Idco sources said that they are providing all-out support for the project and are ready with 3,000 acres of land for it. Besides the problem of land acquisition, issues of compensatory afforestation, providing power, water supply and rehabilitation are being taken care of, the sources claimed.
Though a MoU between the Odisha government and Posco signed on June 22, 2005 for five years has already lapsed, it is yet to be renewed.
The sources that said renewal of the MoU is still being scrutinised in the state law department where the clauses are being reviewed threadbare.
