Centre to invest nearly Rs 2 lakh cr on roads

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said his government was investing a mammoth Rs 1,80,000 crore for building highways and road network as part of efforts to develop world-class infrastructure. Laying the foundation stone of the Rs 325-crore elevated highway project here, he said under the ambitious Rs 1,74,000 crore Bharat Nirman programme, the UPA government has targeted to provide every village with well-laid roads, telephone, electricity and drinking water by 2009. The project constitutes six-laning of a 10 km long stretch on NH-1 passing through the city of Panipat. The project also includes the construction of a 3.4 km long elevated highway on the north-south corridor besides the the construction of two underpasses.
