In what could be described as a major respite for encroachers, Union Environment and Forest Ministry has decided to notify 1993 as the cut-off date for conversion of forest villages to revenue villages notwithstanding Assam Government's plea. But the new set of guidelines has failed to impress State Forest Minister, Pradyut Bordoloi, who accused the Union Forest and Environment Ministry of stealing its thunder. The Minister's contention being that most of the proposals in the guidelines were its brainchild. The problem of eviction from forest land all encroachers that was source of severe headache for States like Assam.
