Nationalist Congress Party expressed shock at the stand of the Center on proposed SEZs in Goa and said that it was a direct affront to the sentiments of the people of Goa and termed it as an acid test for the govt in power. In a press note, NCP Spokesman and General Secretary Surendra Furtado said that the attitude of the Under Secretary of the Union Minister for Commerce stating that the SEZ could not be revoked smacked of "money talking.' He said, when the people of Goa have expressed widespread and unequivocal opposition to SEZ; for this reason the licenses will have to be revoked. Citing precedents of reverting of municipal areas to panchayat of Taleigao, and MPT capitulating to people's sentiments over its jurisdiction, how can an under secretary issue statements with complete disregard to what people of the state want, asked Furtado. The NCP spokesman went on to demand that names of the GDIC officials and ministers who were signatories and under whose tenure these SEZs were approved, should be disclosed, to identify the "enemies within'. He warned that the Government's stand of reducing this issue to matter of arranging water and power to these SEZs was an eye-wash as previously Metastrips sought to usurp water with even the aborted Du Pont project at Keri making an understanding with the PWD for a secret pipeline, he added. Furtado also pointed out that the Indian Navy continues to violate the agreement on access to the Anjidiva island to Goans twice a year despite a written accord when the island was donated to the Navy. He urged the people not to forget the past and learn lessons from it.
