Resentment prevails among marginal farmers of 215 villages of Hoshiarpur district against the government for making amendment to rules of utilisation of water for irrigation from canals. These villages fall on the right side of the kandi canal.Previously farmers of this area had to pay Rs 80 per acre annually in two instalments for the area in which irrigation was done. According to the amendment, they will have to pay for the total command area falling under an outlet of water course. Though the government recently started the construction of the second phase of the canal, it has failed in providing the required funds for the maintenance of the existing canal.
