The risk factors for heart disease are constantly on the rise with change in lifestyle. In such a scenario, creating an environment to prevent the spread of the disease is the key, said Sawai Man Singh hospital's cardiology professor Dr Rajeev Bagarhatta. “The theme of this year's World Heart Day is `Heart choices not hard choices'.Surely the heart disease cases reported in hospitals are on the rise. Now, it is the role of the society to create heartfriendly environment. It is important to know where we are working, where we are playing to slash the factors causing heart disease as environment you live in also responsible for heart disease,“ Dr Bagarhatta added. He said that more outlets of junk and processed food, lack of `no smoking' boards at public places, in crease in alcohol and tobacco consumption, diabetes and excessive use of computers and mobile phones leading to sedentary lifestyle are giving rise to heart diseases. “Mobile phones and computers are meant to be connected with others but they disconnect us from our surroundings,“ the cardiologist said. He pointed out that in the areas where outlets of junk food and processed food are more, residents have a higher chance of getting heart diseaseS. Junk food has high content of salt which leads to hypertension, one of the main factors responsible for heart disease. A private hospital’s consultant cardiology Dr Devendra Srimal said, “Heart diseases are on the rise in younger generation. It is because of smoking or tobacco consumption in any form.” Dr Srimal said that the 70% of the cases which he receives daily are of heart attack or blockages in heart vessels. And 90% of the patients are tobacco consumers.
