Mumbai, July 31 After successfully encouraging eco-friendly idol immersion during Ganeshotsav for two years, Chembur's Pestom Sagar residents have taken their campaign a step further this year.
The Pestom Sagar Citizens' Forum on Thursday organised a pre-festival demonstration where the residents immersed clay idols into artificial wells and described how the wells can be distilled and its toxic remains be disposed of on a daily basis. "We have erected four artificial wells with old Syntex tanks this year with each tank having a capacity of 2,000 litres. Since the past three years, our artificial wells have been catching up in the eastern suburbs. To be more pro-active and encourage more people, we decided to invite people for a demonstration today,' said Dr Vijay Sangole, joint secretary of the Forum.
The one-hour long event was attended by about 50 residents from Chembur, Ghatkopar, Chedda Nagar and Tilak Nagar.
According to Sangole, the Chembur Park offers not just an eco-friendly option for immersion but also a hygienic and religious one. "Here, we have constant pujas in clean, unpolluted ambience for 10 days. The hygiene is much better than a public immersion spot. Besides, senior citizens find these wells convenient because it saves long hours of transport, noise pollution and traffic congestion,' he said. Many residents present there stated that the public immersion spots usually are noisy with crowds often getting rowdy. V Narayan, a committee member of the association, added, "We have been immersing our idols at this spot for the past three years, and have seen the crowd increasing gradually. People like coming here, as the ambience is in tune with the occasion.' Last year, the eco-friendly wells of Pestom Sagar saw immersion of more than 300 Ganpati idols in its nana-nani park venue.
