One worker was killed and another was injured in a Monday morning blast at a chemical factory in Yokohama, police and firefighters said. Bare Frames are all that is left of a chemical factory building in Kanazawa Ward, Yokohama, after an explosion Monday morning. KYODO PHOTO The blast occurred at around 8:50 a.m. at one of the eight buildings at the factory of chemical maker Kanto Koatsu Kagaku Co. in Kanazawa Ward. The building that suffered the blast is used for conducting experiments. The victim, Tatsumi Akihisa, 34, was conducting an experiment on a chemical using a high-pressure container, company officials said. Another worker, 31, suffered minor injuries, police said. The blast took out most of the walls in the three-story building. Police said they are looking into whether the company neglected to follow necessary steps to ensure the safety of workers conducting chemical experiments. At the time of the blast, 36 workers were in the factory compound, the company said. "I heard a huge blast, and this building shook violently," said an employee at a nearby factory. "When I went outside, I saw black smoke spewing out and debris all around."
