Of late, the cotton fabric producers in the country are being pressured by the overseas buying firms to ensure that their fabrics are free from chemical residues, including the presence of pesticides. The growing incidents of such demands have created concern among major powerloom fabric exporters who have drawn the attention of the Union Textile Ministry in this regard, powerloom industry sources said. The powerloom fabric exporters, in a communication to the Textile Ministry, have stated that they have been posted with intimations from the buyers asking the fabric suppliers to ensure that the loom-state fabrics supplied do not contain chemical substances including pesticides to meet the ecological requirements.
