CHENNAI: The Chennai Division of Southern Railway is adopting energy conservation measures in view of the power situation prevailing in the State. Power consumption is going up by leaps and bounds in the Division in view of additional facilities such as lifts, escalators and enhanced illumination provided at the railway stations. The Division is consuming about 38 lakh units a month. With a view to conserving power, it has decided to replace 60/40 watt tubelights in major railway stations, including Chennai Egmore and Central, with the energy efficient compact fluorescent lamps (CFL). The CFLs consume only 28 watts. About 6,600 incandescent tubelights will be replaced with energy efficient lamps, which will result in a saving of 80 kilowatt of power. In Chennai Central station, alone about 1,500 tubelights are to be replaced, which will help the Division to save 18 kilowatt. Similarly the Division is set to replace electric water heaters with solar-powered water heaters. A total of 50 solar powered water heaters will be installed in place of the electric equipment immediately. This would result in a saving of 100 kw of power, according to Divisional Railway Manager S.K. Kulshrestha.
