The forest cover in Chhattisgarh has increased by 635 sq kms in the past decade, though 25 per cent of the total forest area is in various stages of degradation because of reckless exploitation. The Forest Department attributes the increase to its efforts in public participation in forest conservation while the degradation is primarily due to dependence of tribals on forest produce and felling of jungles for commercial gains.
