The wild elephants that once roamed freely over southern China retreated long ago to the dense tropical rain forest that covers the mountains here near the borders with Burma and Laos. The dwindling elephant population that survives has been ravaged in recent years by poachers eager for the animals' precious tusks, which sell for nearly $10,000 a pair.
