Cities too may get Rs 10,000-cr employment cover scheme

The government may launch a Rs 10,000-crore employment guarantee programme for urban areas in the Budget. The chairman of the National Commission on Enterprises in Unorganised Sector, Arjun Sengupta, today said he met the Prime Minister and the finance minister to brief them on the proposal. He said the commission is also reviewing the existing labour laws, including the Contracts Act, to make them more employment friendly. According to him, the one-time funding for the urban employment initiative, will support jobs for 1 crore low-skilled workers, for 200 days a year.
