Pune July 01 The Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) has urged citizens to make a solemn promise to conserve energy. Pradeep Bhargava, Chairman, Confederation of Indian Industries, Maharashtra said that Pune has zero loadshedding and has proposed that consumers should endeavour to keep the energy bill the same in rupees which they were paying before the reliability charge came into force. Bhargava who pointed out that the Pune model that was operational from June 4, 2006, was steered by CII and had resulted in the city being free from load shedding. The model was based on a Public Private Partnership ( PPP ) pattern where the civic society and industry worked with government agencies to solve problems. All consumers whose monthly energy consumption is less than 300 units a month, have been spared from paying "reliability charges" levied to recover the incremental costs of getting extra power at higher cost. So small and marginal consumers get the benefit of 24x7 power without paying a premium. This further encourages consumers to bring down their monthly consumption below 300 units so that they don't have to pay the extra charge. This is both innovative and result oriented, says Bhargava who now has plans to replicate the model not just in the state but across the country as well. So far the Pune model has been made applicable to Baramati and Navi Mumbai areas.
