Ahmedabad: For a long time the city has been careless with potable water supply and the authorities, under political pressure, have been avoiding reforms leading to wastage and unaccountable use of water. If price-sensitive Amdavadis are known for judicious spending, they do not seem to respect water. No wonder JNNURM refused to fund any of the water supply projects of the city. An Asian Development Bank (ADB) survey for 2007-08 says that though the average supply of water to each Amdavadi household is 143 litres, the consumption is 171 to 200 litres. The fault lies in leaking toilet valves, washing vehicles with potable water and leakage in water supply lines. This is when the current production capacity of Ahmedabad Municipal N Corporation (AMC) is just 168 litres a day per connection, while the national average is 244 litres a day per connection. This only points to the blatant water wastage. The reason can be well understood. While AMC charges luted water. Against the national av-Rs 1.39 per 1,000 litres, it is way be- erage of 24.5 per cent metred supply, low the national average of Rs 4.91, Ahmedabad has just 3 per cent. The study also blames the low status of revenue collection for water supply which is one of the least in the country
