Jamshedpur, Jan. 27: The Jharkhand State Pollution Control Board (JSPCB) has decided to serve notices to three civic bodies for polluting river Subernarekha, considered the lifeline of Singhbhum.
Senior officials said that the decision was taken following a survey that revealed how untreated sewage water was being released into the river by the Mango Notified Area Committee, the Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee and the Jugsalai Municipality.
Pollution control board officials maintained that all the three civic bodies lacked waste water treatment facility. They said the report would be sent to the Central Pollution Control Board, which commissioned the survey. The notices are likely to be served in a couple of days.
Sources said the regional pollution control board office had earlier asked the civic bodies to inform how they were treating domestic waste and where they were releasing the sewage water. However, none of the three furnished a reply, prompting the JSPCB to carry out a survey.
Officials said that the survey was aimed at identifying the places from where waste water was entering Subernarekha. The report conceded that the downstream was heavily polluted due to release of untreated water into the river.
Regional officer of JSPCB R.N. Choudhary said that the survey covered areas from Bara flats to Ramnagar along the marine drive.
