Even as the Bharatiya Janata Party has expressed displeasure about the manner in which the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has undertaken sewerage treatment for the rivers in the city, the latter has sought fresh funds under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) for continuing the work. The civic administration is also readying a plan to address the sewerage treatment demands up to 2015. The BJP leadership is not amused, saying that PMC should address present day issues before gazing into the future. After exhausting the sanctioned Rs 86.13 crore for augmenting the sewerage treatment plants and pumping stations in the city, the PMC had put up a proposal seeking Rs 158.17 crore for upgrade of the facility. Now, yet another proposal for Rs 232.25 crore is getting ready to meet the needs of 2015. Municipal Commissioner Praveensinh Pardeshi said a plan addressing the needs of 2015, with water supply requirement at 1,074 MLD and treatment facility at 757 MLD is getting laid out. "Considering the existing 305 MLD and the additional 262 MLD, we would still be short by 192 MLD. Hence we are readying another proposal for Rs 232.25 crore which would see Pune as the first city to have clean river water,' he said. He said the PMC was open to have the system audited but fresh proposal for improving the facilities will be made. "I have written to the Water and Power Consultancy Services (WAPCOS), the central agency who will conduct the necessary checks. They will be coming down shortly to give us a report,' said Pardeshi. "Meanwhile, we are seeking more funds to increase the treatment facility at the plants. Already construction is on at the various treatment plants. As of now the existing facility treats 305 million litres per day. The Rs 86.13 crore has been sanctioned and now we are looking to add another 262 MLD capacity and for this we have sent a revised plan for Rs 158.17 crore,' he said. Earlier this week, Senior BJP leader Gopinath Munde had declared that "there was sheer misuse of funds' and that the river water is not being treated well. BJP corporator Anil Shirole had even sent a letter to the sewerage department seeking answers on the use of funds. "The river water needs to be treated. I was told that the matter would be looked into but no definite answers have been given,' he said. BJP corporator Ujjwal Keskar is now planning to shoot off another letter seeking information about work completed and what remains to be done. "Samples have to be collected and checked. River treatment is not river beautification,' he said and sought details from PMC about where the funds have been spent till date. "There is no point in addressing the future problems when the present problems have not been resolved,' he said.
