Firecracker wholesalers of the State Capital fail to ensure anti-pollution norms. However, it is claimed that popular manufacturers have assured the smoke and noise is comparatively less this year. “We cannot show you the specifications in latest form of rockets, flower pots, sparklers and reels. But, can guarantee that they will not lead to air and sound pollution like previous years,” said a 35 year old wholesale owner. Similarly, the oldest wholesaler of the city, J Shah and Sons near Bakri Bazaar seemed to adhere to eco-friendly terms. “There are no specifications marked in the box of fire-crackers but our products will produce less smoke and noise this year.” Wholesalers who put up stalls only in this festival of the year accepted that the pollution level cannot be decreased under any circumstances. “Crackers are a major reason of pollution. So, the term eco-friendly nowhere exists,” said Mithun Kumar who is into this selling business at Upper Bazaar for last four years. The buyers also seemed ‘clueless’ about the norms of pollution control board. “Are the norms of producing and firing crackers within certain restrictions really followed? When the shopkeepers do not follow, we cannot obviously contribute to save the environment in a full-fledged manner in Diwali,” Abhigyan Thakur, a student of Tender Heart School said. While some denizens pledged not to use rockets or bombs as most of these crackers produce noise and cause smoke. “Since Diwali is a festival of lights, it is important to light crackers. But, this year I will use only sparklers (fulljhadi) because my daughter is allergic to dust,” said Amrita Das, a home maker residing in Chutia. Significantly, Jharkhand State Pollution Control Board (JSPCB) has made an appeal to the residents on not using noise producing crackers between 10 pm to 4am. Officials of the board were unable to mention laws violating the safety of environment. “Please go through the website of our board. We do not remember the laws,” an officer said. Besides not adapting the less-pollution norms, most of the wholesalers across the city are selling crackers without any caution like fire-extinguisher, sandbags, enough water storage and maintaining a distance from the nearby shop. “We rarely need to maintain the precautions. Afterall, our temporary stall will be opened once all the crackers are sold,” said a retailer of Hinoo.
