Recently, the government launched the vastly-improved version of the ministry of environment and forests' Website www.envfor.nic.in, making it accessible and user-friendly through an easy-to-navigate interface. The major focus of the new-look site is to enhance clarity and transparency of the environmental and forestry clearance processes. Accordingly, the site incorporates a search engine to provide detailed status on the ongoing/pending projects, with the information being constantly upgraded. The ministry has plans to make the application process for these clearances online. Meanwhile, the ministry announced that number of projects awaiting clearances have come down to 210 in the three months ending 30 June, 2009 from 700 earlier. The site provides project-wise information including the date of their receipt (received before or after 30 April, 2009); listing of pending projects updated weekly; complete history/ present status of the projects received after April 30, 2009 updated fortnightly; circulars
issued from time to time; and other related information. While inaugurating the site, the Union minister for environment and forests Jairam Ramesh revealed that his ministry would begin investigations as to whether Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati had obtained environmental clearances before erecting statues of herself and other dalit leaders in parks and forested arrears. The information on the Web site does not list any of Mayawati's 'pet projects'
