Cleaner groundwater

Scientists from the US Department of Energy (DoE) claim to have developed a cheaper and easier way to remove toxic contaminants from groundwater. The technique could be used to clean up military bases, chemical and petroleum plants and weapon production facilities. Researchers at the DoE's Pacific Northwest Laboratory said the process, called In-Situ Redox Manipulation (ISRM), is 60% cheaper over 10 years than current remediation methods. Field tests have shown that ISRM can remove chromate from groundwater to levels lower than drinking water standards, the researchers said.
