Increasing the green cover in Gujarat may be high on government's agenda but the court is already questioning its 'negligence' about protecting trees. A public interest litigation has been filed in Gujarat High Court by social worker Abduljabbar Ghanchi seeking an order for Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and Gujarat State Textile Corporation (GSTC) to salvage trees in campuses of closed textile mills in eastern part of the city. He has cited examples of massive tree felling in Ambica Mills compound in Khokhra where the GIDC is developing an apparel park and how only a petrol pump exists in place of Vijay Mills. However, after trees were removed on a large scale from there, AMC imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 on people involved in the act.
