The Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, set the foundation stone for scattered houses scheme at the Praja Patham programme held during his visit to the district here on Wednesday. Addressing a huge gathering on the occasion, the Chief Minister said that the Congress government unlike the earlier TD government was committed for all-round development of the city. "Around Rs 1,575 crore were sanctioned under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) to undertake various developmental works for all-round development of the city. Works worth Rs 800 crore have already begun. State government applied for another Rs 2,000 crore funds which would be sanctioned very soon,' the Chief Minister said. Dr Rajasekhar Reddy alleged that the former Chief Minister Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu neglected the city's development during the Telugu Desam's nine-year regime. The Chief Minister said that the industries here were declared sick when the Congress came into power in 2004 due to the TD's rule. He said they gave life to all those industries. Dr Rajasekhar Reddy emphasised upon the basic amenities like drinking water, power supply, housing, employment being provided to the urban poor by the State government. Talking about the Rs 2-a-kg rice scheme, the Chief Minister said, "Telugu Desam which came to power with the rice scheme scrapped it after it came into power. It shows the commitment of that party towards welfare of the common man. Now for Rs 120 a small family can get groceries like rice, pulses, cooking oil sufficient for a month. This shows our commitment towards the poor and needy. We have sanctioned more ration cards, pensions and its amount, provided jobs to unemployed youth under Rajiv Udyoga Sri scheme, better treatment to the poor under Arogyasri and houses under Indiramma housing scheme,' he said. Earlier, he distributed pension sanction letters to the beneficiaries those included in the list recently. He also gave placement orders to those who got jobs after they underwent job-oriented training given by the Greater Visakha Municipal Corporation (GVMC).
