The Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, will lay the foundation stone for modernisation of delta at Puligadda village in Avanigadda constituency on June 6. The government has undertaken the works of modernising the canals and drains in Krishna and Guntur districts with an estimated cost of Rs 4,500 crore in which Rs 2,130 crore will be spent in Krishna district. Initially, the works in some packages have been awarded to contractors and works have been going on in some sectors as summer is most ideal for completing canal works. The irrigation department is planning to release water in the second week of June to give more time for the contractors. "Irrigation advisory board meeting is on June 7. It will decide the date of releasing water into canals. Till then earth works and repair works will continue. In Avanigadda constituency, modernisation of irrigation canal from Aswaraopalem to Mandapakala will be taken up," said the superintending engineer, Mr T. Sivaji. According to the SE, it will take 51 months to complete the modernisation of canals and drains which were neglected for years. The works have been divided into 19 packages. Tenders were called for several times due to poor response from contractors, which delayed the works. Finally, tenders were cleared for eight packages and six packages were awarded for only earth work. Still five packages are pending as there are no takers. "We will revise the engineering designs of those packages according to the schedule and call for fresh tenders next year," Mr Sivaji told this correspondent. That means not a single company has come forward to take the bidding in drains modernisation works. The Chief Minister will also participate in a Rythu Sadassu on modern technology in farm sector. More than 15,000 farmers will attend the meeting.
