The CNG stations across the province would observe a day-long strike on Monday against increase in the existing taxes and introduction of new ones by the federal government. The strike would be observed under the aegis of the All Pakistan CNG Association. The CNG stations would stop supply of gas to motorist from 12midnight for 24 hours. A spokesman of the association in the NWFP, Alif Khan, told Dawn that after the Frontier, similar strikes would be observed in other provinces. He stated that if the government remained unmoved with the strike, they would evolve their future line of action later. Through the Finance Act, he said, the government increased various taxes including 31 per cent increase in gas rates and 10 per cent increase in electricity charges. Apart from that, the government had proposed petroleum development tax on CNG stations which was unjustified as natural gas was a local product. Mr Khan regretted that first, the government encouraged investors to join the business and set up CNG stations and now it was allegedly making them suffer. He added that the motorists were also encouraged to switch over to CNG which helped in saving huge amount of foreign exchange as the import of petroleum had been reduced due to increasing consumption of gas.
