MUMBAI: All eyes will be on the state guest house on Friday when CM Prithviraj Chavan will meet Union environment minister Jairam Ramesh to decide the fate of a slew of infrastructure projects, including the crucial coastal road proposal. The ambitious scheme hit a roadblock recently after the Centre struck down plans for reclamation which, according to state officials, is the only cost-effective way to construct the vital corridor. Whether Mumbai will have a coastal road built on reclaimed land in select areas or it will have costly bridges on stilts or pillars similar to the existing sea link will be decided on Friday, an official said. "If the project gets the nod, it will pave the way for a garlanded link from Versova to Bandra and then from Worli to Cuffe Parade and later from Colaba to Sewri. Significantly, there will be no need to pay toll," the official added. The link will also eliminate the need to build elevated corridors like the Pedder Road flyover and high-speed bridges along the Western Express Highway between Bandra and Dahisar. Besides the coastal road plan, the meeting will look at ways to expedite the Navi Mumbai airport and the Jaitapur nuclear plant projects. "We will discuss steps on how to speed up the design approvals for the second airport so that the state can complete its tendering process as soon as possible and appoint developers to kick-start construction. As far as the nuclear plant is concerned, the meeting is likely to explore ways to convince the people of Jaitapur on the benefits of the project. Issues like monetary compensation will also be taken up," an official said.
