Cold wave conditions continued in much of north India on Tuesday, with some places even in the plains of Punjab recording near-zero minimum temperature. Dense fog hit vehicular traffic in many places, delayed some flights and threw train schedules out of gear. At least 47 Delhi-bound trains alone were forced to alter their timings. In Himachal, fresh snowfall in the high-altitude areas of Kullu, Chamba, Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti districts intensified the cold. In Shimla, the weather department said there would be heavy snowfall from January 8 to January 11. In Punjab, Adampur in Jalandhar district was the coldest (0.5 degrees Celsius), followed by Amritsar (0.8 degrees). Haryana’s Hisar town, which was freezing at minus 2.1 degrees Celsius on Monday, saw a slight increase in minimum temperature (2.2 degrees Celsius). Mount Abu (0.5 degrees) in the hills and Churu (1.2 degrees) in the plains were the coldest places in Rajasthan. Muzaffarnagar continued to be the coldest in UP with a minimum temperature of 2.3 degrees Celsius. Bihar, however, continued to be the exception — the state has not had a cold wave this season.
