At least eight people have died due to the intense cold wave in Daringbadi block in Kandhamal district in the last 15 days. The deceased have been identified as Udra Pradhan (60) of Partamaha, Gumetalu Badamajhi (70) of Kiramaha, Sangudisaha Majhi (55) of Tudubiju, Sikaalu Behera Majhi (94) of Tajungi, Munduda Muthamajhi (62) of Tekangia, Madimanga Majhi (63) of Kasapanka, Agnimati Nayak (80) of Kerubadi, Agnidas Ranasingh (92) of Alipadar village. Though sources said several people have died in the interior areas, the district administration does not have any specific information about this. There are reports of deaths due to the cold wave, but there is no official confirmation till now, according to Daringbadi BDO Sunakar Sharma. With the night temperature hovering around the freezing point in many areas of the district, dense foggy condition prevailing till late morning hours throws normal life out of gear. While the overall temperature in Kandhamal has gone up a bit due to the low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal, the condition has changed very little in Daringbadi which witnessed subzero temperature and snowfall in the last few days. The tourists, however, seem to enjoy the weather of Daringbadi very much. The inflow of tourist from Odisha and other states has substantially increased. To attract more tourists, the district administration is going to organise a winter carnival next week.
