Colorado Fires Destroy Dozens of Homes and Threaten Others

  • 13/06/2000

Dry and windy conditions kept two wildfires in Colorado burning out of control today and at least 700 people from returning to see if their homes had survived overnight. Dozens of houses were destroyed. Flames raced through the crisp ground and across the tops of pine trees in the foothills north and south of Denver when the fires started on Monday. A fire burning east of Rocky Mountain National Park, the Bobcat Gulch fire, is believed to have been started by an illegal campfire. The Hi Meadow fire, burning about 35 miles southwest of Denver near the town of Bailey, was caused by lightning, officials said.
