Even under adverse conditions, Punjab farmers have produced bumper crop Farmers of the state epitomise the true Punjabi spirit. Producing bumper crop year after year and surpassing national average have become a habit for Punjab, right from the days of Green Revolution. Punjab alone produces nearly 20 per cent of the entire country's wheat. The spirit and the hard work put in by the Punjab farmers have firmed up country's food security even under adverse conditions of inclement weather, militancy, diseases, pest attacks or drought. Dr P S Rangi, consultant, State Farmers' Commission, says, "Around 1965-1966, when Green Revolution had started and new technologies, new seeds and fertilisers were coming into the country. Punjabi farmers took to the change immediately. A lot of credit goes to Punjab Agricultural University and the then state government. While PAU spearheaded research and dissemination of technology, the government had put in place infrastructure, like canals, mandis and minimum support price among other things. And laborious farmers of Punjab never looked back. Till date, Punjab and Haryana contribute about 60 per cent of foodgrains to the Central pool.' A farmer, president of BKU and chairman of the Punjab Mandi Board, Ajmer Singh Lakhowal, says, "Even during the 80s and the 90s, when terrorism was at its peak in Punjab and an eerie silence would engulf the state after sunset, our farmers did not stop tilling their fields.
