Committee wants steps to prevent pollution of rivers

ON Inspection: Assembly Petitions Committee Chairman Kovai Thangam, and other members enquiring about facilities in GH in Karur on Thursday. KARUR: Assembly Petitions Committee has recommended construction of a bridge across the Amaravathy river at Pasupathypalayam in Karur in lieu of the existing causeway there, according to its chairman and Valparai MLA Kovai Thangam. Addressing the media after a tour of some areas of the district and an interaction with officials regarding disposal of petitions received by the committee, Mr. Thangam said its other recommendations would be steps to prevent pollution of the Cauvery and the Amaravathy by effluents released by numerous dyeing units and supply of potable water to Thathampalayam and Thannasigoundanur as the water resources there have been affected by the effluents discharged from the Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Limited from its Kagithapuram paper mill. Similarly, the panel would recommend renovation and upgradation of the Kattalai High Level Channel, Mr. Thangam said.
