Composting units idle!

The Margao Municipal Council has moved in to invite reputed and experienced companies to set up a garbage treatment plant. But, sadly, the composting units set up within the jurisdiction of the Civic body upon orders of the Bombay High Court have literally hit a big block. Constructed with much fanfare and at great cost following the court orders, the units remain idle for want of manpower to operate them. The Civic body might have spent around Rs 7 lakh on the 11 units set up across the state, but believe it or not, only two units are in operation for want of manpower. This assumed significance given that the Civic body had planned to set up 60 composting units in the 20 Municipal wards. MMC Chairperson Savio Coutinho admitted that the composting units are lying idle and underutilised, but strongly felt that the units should be put in operation by engaging the required manpower.
