The Coordination Committee for people displaced for development projects has requested the district administration to implement the order released by the Department of Revenue on March 22 for rehabilitating those evicted from Moolamppilly on a war-footing. A meeting of the committee expressed concern on the delay on the part of the district administration in implementing the rehabilitation project citing technical reasons, while 24 families have been living on the streets since February 6. The committee called for release of Rs.50,000 allotted as rent and Rs. 10,000 as shifting charges of each family from the contingency funds. According to the rehabilitation package, new houses should be constructed before December 6, when the 10-month deadline ends. Construction work can begin before the monsoon only if residential plots are registered in beneficiaries' name and handed over within a month, as instructed by the government. The resolution passed at the meeting promised support for all constructive steps taken towards rehabilitation and warned of launching protest measures if there was any delay in implementing the project. Meanwhile, A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish said that clarifications had been sought from the State government regarding the rehabilitation of those displaced from areas other than Kadamakudy for the proposed International Container Transhipment Terminal at Vallarpadam. The existing order allows only 4 cents of land for those to be displaced from Eloor, Cheranalloor, Vaduthala and Mulavukadu, he said. Eighteen families in Eloor, 22 in Cheranalloor, 26 in Vaduthala and 25 in Mulavukadu still remain to be rehabilitated.
